How far do you walk to get your print job? Is the printer on your desk, in your office or down the hall? We find that in typical office environments there is one print device for every two employees. That means many printers are sitting on desks for convenience or for confidentiality, but at what cost and are they necessary?

Print engines, especially laser printers are severely underutilized. So much so, that we have excess print capacity all around us. Optimum monthly volume on the average laser printer is 3,000 pages per month, but only produces 800. So a company with 500 employees with a 2:1 employee to printer ratio has 250 printers with the capacity to print 750,000 prints per month. A few years back I read the book, The Fish Philosophy, which is a great read.  The book is about the famed Pikes Fish Market in Seattle, Washington.  People come from all over the world to see these guys sling fish all over the market.  You order a certain fish, the guy at the counter barks out the order and before you know it, a fish conveyer belt starts.

Visitors of the market are amazed at how much fun these guys have doing their job. The public’s interest inspired Pike’s to write the book, which details how the employees at Pike’s subscribe to a philosophy that makes an otherwise mundane somewhat smelly job enjoyable.

One of my favorite parts of the book is the chapter that discusses, “Who are you being while you’re doing what you’re doing.”  It encompasses the idea of being aware of your actions while you’re working and how those actions affect your behaviors.
