Savin’s are Harmless

May 30th, 2012 | by Blake Elliott

A few things that Dr. Chew Huck Chin fails to mention in the article “Your Office Photocopier May Not Be as Harmless as You Think” is that Savin equipment leads the industry in best practices for sustainability and do not face the same issues that other manufacturers face.

“Photocopiers create ozone through corona wires.” The Savin office copiers use a charge roller system and not a corona wires. This nearly eliminates the ozone output from the machine. An ozone filter in the exhaust fan of the machine removes the small amount produced.  These filters are replaced regularly as a part of the maintenance schedule.

Toner dust.  Savin machines have sealed cartridges for toner replacement so there is no exposed toner dust from dumping a bottle into a machine.  When the cartridge is installed into the machine, the machine opens the cartridge. The grooved augur inside the bottle moves the toner to the opening and into the machine as a motor turns the cartridge. The area is sealed to eliminate toner dust.

Standley Systems offers toner recycle bins to all clients.  The toner cartridges in Savin machines incorporate mechanical and electrical components that are part of the imaging process. When the toner runs out, many of these parts are in as-new condition and can be re-used. Recycling these cartridges keeps them out of landfills and conserves the materials and energy it would take to make new ones.

Selenium.  Selenium is a photoconductive coating applied to the photocopying drum.  This coating is no longer used in Savin machines.  Savin uses an Organic Photo Conductor (OPC), which do not have the characteristics of selenium.

Carbon monoxide gas.  Savin office copiers do not emit carbon monoxide gas as a byproduct of operation.

Bright light.  The Savin office copier uses a xenon lamp. The brightness of the lamp is much less than traditional lamps but closing the cover/document feeder is still recommended during use.

As Ricoh, maker of Savin copiers, continues to be the most sustainable company for the eighth year in a row, Standley Systems is able to provide their customers with the most reliable and best-selling copiers without causing harm to their health.
